Apple is once again facing some very stiff competition from its biggest rival Samsung.
Samsung has again upped the stakes in its battle with tech giant Apple by unveiling no less than FOUR new phones at its gadget-mongous ‘Galaxy Unpacked 2019’.
The Case for the Galaxy S10…
The yearly launch event saw Samsung unleash a collection of stunning new devices – this time, the Galaxy S10 smartphone is definitely likely to be the big seller, as well as the new Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone which will certainly get all the headlines.
The exciting launch event kicked off on Wednesday evening February 20th at 7 pm UK time and was live-streamed around the world from San Francisco. So here goes with a round-up of the new S10.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is the newest entry in the massively popular Galaxy S range. From the moment you see the latest flagship handset, it’s very clear that a great deal has changed.
That’s just as well for Samsung, after all, they do seem to have recently lost its crown as best Android smartphone to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. We’ll have to see what future reviews say about the Galaxy S10, but Samsung has really pulled out all of the stops with this latest flagship smartphone, and from first views, it may well just be enough to reclaim their crown.
The new all-screen design enables the display to run to the very outer edge of the handset, leaving almost no bezels whatsoever, and leaving the speaker grill in a small recess on the edge of the smartphone.
The front-facing Dual-Pixel 10-megapixel camera has now been relocated to a rather small O-shaped cut-out (hence the Infinity-O name) in the top right-hand corner of the display.
Just like the very first generation of smartphones that used a wide notch at the top of their display, this takes a little getting used to. The majority of the time, the deep black colours on the stunning Quad HD AMOLED panel hide the small, circular hole so that it is not noticeable at all, but some of the time, for example when you launch the default Messages app which is a bright white, the “O” sticks out quite significantly.
The Galaxy S10 bezels are very noticeably smaller on this device, but sadly the front-facing camera is much, much more prominent. The ‘hole-punch’ in the upper part of the screen also means that the battery icon, aeroplane mode, and a number of the other system icons have to be pushed along so that they are close to the centre of the screen, which is a bit annoying as they are then not symmetrical.
Having said that, the big advantage of the Infinity-O design is obvious the second that you hold the Galaxy S10 because, despite its massive 6.1-inch screen, the handset remains easy to handle with just one hand.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S10 – THE CAMERA
Certainly one of the best innovations for the Galaxy S10 is the camera. In 2018 Samsung introduced a secondary sensor to enable the bokeh-touting Live Focus photographs which were first introduced with the Galaxy Note range to the Galaxy S9. For the Galaxy S10 Samsung has increased the amount of rear-mounted sensors again – which brings the total to three.
This latest triple-camera offering includes a 12-megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and also a variable aperture which can swap between f/1.5 and f/2.4, as well as a new 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 – phew. This enables 0.5x wide-angle shots, the same as seen on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, as well as 2x optical zoom, impressive.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S10 – OTHER FEATURES
Samsung has now removed the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that was present on previous devices in the Galaxy S range. It has instead opted for the biometric sensor which has been relocated to below the edge-to-edge screen on the front of the handset. The Seoul-based tech giant says this new sensor is considerably more reliable than solutions from its competitors as it records every single ridge in your print, this seems to us like Samsung literally sticking their fingers up to its rivals, lol.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is going to be available with either 128GB or 512GB of built-in storage, but both models come with the ability to increase the amount of storage with an additional 512GB by utilising the MicroSD card slot. Galaxy S10 will be available in Prism Green, Prism White, Prism Black, and Prism Blue and prices start from £869.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is available to buy now from most network providers and retailers including Vodafone.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S10 – THE EARLY VERDICT
So for the tenth anniversary of its incredibly successful Galaxy S smartphone range, Samsung has added a deluge of incredibly innovative changes and improvements to its flagship phone. There can be no doubt that this is certainly the finest smartphone that Samsung has ever built, and considering its history, that is really saying something. It might well even be the best Android smartphone ever, time will tell.
